Varkala Police Station

Varkala PS was first housed in a building at Chilakkoor. It was subsequently shifted to building at Maithanam, Varkala in 1922 (1097 ME). From there, it was shifted to the then newly constructed building on 1937. Building in Survey No. 2640/D and building No. was VI/835 of Varkala Municipality consists of 75 cents of land. Later the present Police Station building was constructed close to the old building and the station was shifted to present building on 19.06.2008 as per G.O.No. GO(Rt)No.1806/2007/Home Dated 06.07.2007(SRO No. 611/2007). First floor of the Police Station is now functioning as Community Resource Centre from 2013 onwards.

Upto 2012 Jurisdiction of Varkala PS comprises six villages namely Varkala, Ayiroor, Edava, Chemmaruthy, Cherunniyoor and Vettoor. As per the notification of Home (E) Department G.O.(Rt) No. 1805/2012/Home dated, Thiruvananthapuram 18/06/2012. Now the jurisdictional area of Varkala Police Station comprises Revenue Villages Varkala, Vettoor and Cherunniyoor.

Tourism Importance

Varkala is a well-known tourist destination. There are various tourist attractions in Varkala, such as the 2000-year-old Sree Janardhana Swamy Temple, the religious site Sivagiri Mutt, the 924 ft Varkala Tunnel, and Kappil Lake, the Nature Center, etc. But the coastal city of Varkala is mainly renowned for its exotic beach.

Varkala Beach (Papanasam Beach)

Varkala beach is an important tourist destination and it is also marked in World Tourism Map. Thousands of foreign and Indian tourists visit this place on every tourist season. Shallow beach and Cliffs (North and South) are attracted by the tourists. Pleasant climate, lush green coconut trees and well secured atmosphere increases the number of tourists every year. Another specialty of the destination is springs (known as medicated water) emerge from the North Cliff.

Karkkadaka Vavu Bali

Karkidaka Vavu Bali or Vavubali Tharpanam is an important ritual observed by Hindus in Kerala in the month of Karkidakam (July- August), the last month of Malayalam calendar. People offer ‘bali’ to the departed souls of ancestors on this day at various holy rivers, the seashore and temples. Varkala Papanasam beach is also one of the major religious destinations on the day and thousands of people throng the beach on that day offering ritual poojas.

Varkala Janardhana Swami Temple

Varkala Janardhana Swami Temple

Janardana Swami Temple is an ancient Temple at Varkala (believed to be two thousand years old). It is also known as Varkala Temple. The temple is located close to the Papanasam beach. It is a sacred pilgrim center and is a famous ancient temple of Vishnu. The temple has an ancient bell removed from a shipwreck, donated by the captain of the Dutch vessel.



Sivagiri is a pilgrimage centre in Varkala. This is the place where the grate social reformer and sage Sree Narayana Guru's tomb is located and place where guru was enlightened and got the salvation. The Samadhi of the Guru here attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri Pilgrimage days 30 December to 1 January. The Sivagiri Mutt, built in 1904, is situated at the top of the Sivagiri hill near Varkala.


Historical Importance

T.S Canal and Tunnel(Sivagiri to Ramanthali and Vallakkadavu to Vettoor)

These are Historical monuments which were built during the period of Travancore Rulers. Varkala Tunnel, also known Varkala Turuthu, is one of the historic sites of the region. This Canal was used for water transportation in early times which was connected between lakes. These tunnels are known as Valiathurappu and Cheriyathurappu. These are famous for their engineering skill and foreigners are being attracted to it.

Main Projects through the Police Station

(i) Janamaithri Suraksha Project

33 wards in Varkala Municipality are divided into 10 beats in Varkala PS limit. There 10 beat officers and a CRO in this station. Effective patrolling and meetings are conducting and people are co-operative.

(ii) Clean Campus Safe Campus

Clean Campus Safe Campus project is effectively conducted in all UP Schools, High Schools and Higher Secondary schools, Colleges. Awareness class and campus cleaning programmes were conducted and still continuing. Awareness classes were conducted with the co-operation of Excise, Health and other departments. Road safety programmes and video programmes will be conducted soon. School Monitoring Committee is formed in said educational institutions
